You Are the Delegated Priest of Your Home: Preston Woody on Faith and Manhood

September 18, 2026•6 min read

What's up, champions? Here's the question that sat with me long after we stopped recording Episode 5 of Getting Real with Real: if there's darkness in your house — on the TV, in the marriage, in the silence at dinner — whose fault is that?

My guest this week is Preston Woody, a man who spent ten years building a church before he walked away from the only career he'd ever wanted. He's not a pastor anymore. He's the founder of Saints Crown, a coaching ministry that takes men from clarity to action. And in this conversation, he handed me a line I haven't been able to shake: you are the delegated priest of your home.

The Kitchen That Changed Everything

Preston's story didn't start with a crisis of faith. It started with a crisis of loyalty. Ten years into pastoral ministry, he was watching people get saved, healed, delivered on the platform — and dying internally the second he stepped off it. His leadership's advice was to pray harder, take more pills, and keep it private.

He tried. For a while, he maintained the image while the depression grew and the doses increased. Then came the argument in the kitchen with his wife, new baby in the house, and a truth he couldn't unfeel:

"I looked her in the eye, and I knew in this moment that if I don't make a change now in six months, she'll be gone."

He resigned. Signed a non-compete that barred him from preaching or planting a church anywhere nearby. And then he did something most of us never do when we're desperate for direction — he went and got quiet. Three days and nights alone in the woods, phone left in the car, asking the Holy Spirit one unanswered question: what do I do now?

He got back to his car, checked his phone for the first time in three days, and the first message he opened was a stranger asking if Preston would coach him. That client became three, then five, then ten. Saints Crown was never marketed into existence. It was prayed into existence.

Don't Die With the Mission Still In You

Preston's ministry runs on a phrase: don't die. Not "don't die" as in stay alive — "don't die" as in stop letting yourself die internally long before your body catches up.

"I believe if your heart is still beating, that means you are still on commission for a mission."

That's not a slogan for a t-shirt. It's a diagnosis. Most of the men Preston coaches aren't struggling because they lack ambition — they're struggling because they've spent years marinating in their past, using old wounds as the ceiling on what they believe is possible now. Preston's read on it, borrowed straight from Ebenezer Scrooge: the past gives you your story, but it rarely gives you enough leverage to change. What changes a man is a clear look at the future he's currently building — and whether he actually wants to live in it.

The Wound He Wouldn't Reveal

Here's where the episode stopped being comfortable. Preston told me about sitting in a Father's Day service, years after planting his own ministry, when he heard the Holy Spirit say something he'd never let himself hear before:

"Son, I cannot heal a wound that you're unwilling to reveal."

Preston had spent his whole adult life turning his father wound into fuel — proof he could perform, proof he was tough, proof he didn't need anyone. What he'd never done was call it what it was: a wound. The moment he did, in a chair in a church service, he said his capacity to feel came back online. Tears he hadn't cried in years.

If you're a high-achieving, driven man reading this, sit with that for a second. Performing through your pain isn't the same as healing from it. You can build an entire life, an entire ministry, an entire business on top of a wound you've never actually named.

You Are the Delegated Priest of Your Home

Now to the line that gives this episode its name. I asked Preston for a truth about manhood he believes but is afraid to say publicly. He didn't hesitate:

"Your household — if you're a father and a husband — is your responsibility. It's not your wife's. It's not your kids'. It's your delegated responsibility. The spiritual climate of your home is not your pastor's responsibility. It's yours. You are the delegated priest of your home. So if there's darkness, if there's wild stuff on the TV, if there's things happening in your house, you're accountable. Nobody else. You won't be able to blame your pastor. You won't be able to blame your wife or blame your kids. That's your domain, entrusted to you."

Champions, that's not condemnation. It's an assignment — and an invitation. What you let into your home, what you watch when nobody's looking, what you drink in front of your kids while telling them not to — you're inviting that spirit in. But the reverse is just as true. Step in, lead, and create an atmosphere of presence and worship, and watch your family flourish in ways you never dreamed possible.

What He'd Tell a Fatherless Man

Toward the end of our conversation, I asked Preston what one sentence he wants every fatherless man watching to believe about himself. His answer:

"You matter more than you think you do... How do I know that you matter? Because Jesus Christ gave his life with you in mind. He knew every mistake you'd ever make before you made it, and he chose to die for you anyway."

That's the whole show, honestly. Not hustle. Not hype. A man taking ownership of the home, the wound, and the assignment God already gave him.

Your One Action Step

Don't just read this and nod, champion. Tonight, before you go to bed, sit your family down — even if it's just you and one kid, even if it's five minutes — and lead one deliberate moment of prayer over your home, out loud, where they can hear you. That's it. That's the whole step. You are the delegated priest of your home. Start acting like it today.
